INTRODUCTION

The Department of Haematology National Hospital, Abuja has an established tradition of delivery of quality and efficient clinical/laboratory services to our clients.

It started as a unit of the hospital’s combined pathology departments (Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Histopathology and Medical Microbiology) and by 2002 had developed into an independent specialised department with its own sub-specialities and units.

The department is fully accredited for residency training by the West African College of Physicians (WACP) and National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN).

The department is actively involved in training of resident doctors and other postgraduate medical officers, house officers, medical laboratory scientist interns, corps members as well as students on industrial attachment. It also conducts research in haematological pathologies and related fields.

1.1    Vision Statement

The department of haematology and blood transfusion is aligned with NHA’s mission and vision of excellent service delivery to all our clients. This is achieved by the combined efforts of doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists and other health care workers in the haematology department.

1.2    Mission Statement.

The department will continue to strive to meet the clinical/laboratory needs of its clients and look towards increasing the scope of its services in the near future.

2.0    QUALITY ASSURANCE POLICY

The Department of Haematology constantly ensures adherence to the principles of quality management system. The department strives to do this by:

  • training and retraining of our staff and regular servicing of all our equipment as required
  • reviewing our standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • adequate record keeping
  • regular calibration and re-calibration of our equipment
  • ensuring work place safety
  • internal and external quality control and assurance
  • reduction in turnaround-time (TAT)
  • frequent client feedbacks by customer satisfaction survey

3.0    STRENGTH OF THE DEPARTMENT

The department has well trained personnel including Consultant Haematologists, Resident doctors, Medical laboratory scientists, Medical laboratory technicians as well supportive clinical staff who provide knowledgeable diagnosis and experienced care. Other staff are Medical Laboratory Assistants, Scientific Officers and Administrative Officers.

The Head of Department is a Consultant Haematologist, a medical doctor who holds a postgraduate fellowship of the WACP, NPMCN or its equivalent.

  • General haematology
  • Coagulation
  • Immunohaematocytology
  • Blood transfusion services
  • Blood products

Clinical services

  • Inherited disease clinic – covers haematological inherited conditions
  • Haematological malignancies clinic
  • General haematology clinic
  • Inpatient care and ward consultations
  • Outpatient procedures
    • Diagnostic – Bone marrow aspiration/biopsy
    • Therapeutic – Haematology day-care including chemotherapy

Training

  • Training of haematology resident doctors, residents from other medical specialties as well as medical students.
  • Provision of internship training for medical laboratory scientists.
  • Provision of in-training industrial attachment for undergraduate students.

Research

  • Conducting and providing support for research in haematology and related areas.
  • Collaboration with other researchers in related clinical and laboratory fields.
  • Conduct peer-reviewed research to meet the key priorities of the department and clients.

4.0 OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES

Consultation hours

  • Clinic consultation hours: 8:00am – 4:00pm
  • Emergency hours: 4:00pm – 8:00am

Clinical consultations

  • Patients may come to the clinic via referral or walk-in.
  • Department sees all follow-up patients strictly by appointment.
  • At all times, care given is under the supervision of a Consultant.
  • All consultations are subject to the laid down hospital procedures.

Emergency consultations

  • All emergencies will be attended to either as they arrive or based on the severity of the clinical condition.

In-patient care

  • In-patient case are under the care of a consultant and take the form of
    • Two Consultant ward rounds in a week
    • Two Senior Registrar’s wards rounds in a week
    • One Junior Registrar’s ward round in a week

7.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY

The Department ensures Standard Precautions and minimum infection prevention practices that apply to all patient care, regardless of suspected or confirmed infection status of the patient, in any setting where health care is delivered.  The department in this facility has this document which guides staff on how to protect themselves while in the workplace.

Universal precautions are designed for doctors, laboratory staff, nurses, patients and health care workers who were required to come into contact with patients or bodily fluids such as blood and blood products and other fluids that are infectious.

The Precautions include:

  • Hand hygiene.
  • Use of personal protective equipment
  • Sharps safety
  • Cleaning and disinfection of environmental surfaces. 
  • Proper disposal of waste/ waste specimen
  • Hepatitis B vaccination.
  • In addition, fire extinguishers and fire blankets are fixed at strategic points in the laboratory and the working environment in addition to fire alarm systems.
  1.  Policy of Minimum Standards: Haematology Laboratory has been able to put in place internal quality control (IQC) programme. Our Haematology laboratory is a grade three (3) WHO/CDC/NIMR strengthening laboratory quality management toward accreditation (SLMTA). Two phases of the assessment have been carried out.

In terms of clinical services we ensure prompt attention/care are given to our clients both inpatient and outpatients during daily ward rounds, day care services or when they come for their clinic appointments. In cases of emergency patients can be attended to at any time when they present to the emergency unit.
