Quality of Care Policy and Operational Guidelines

1.0 INTRODUCTION
The Department of Nuclear Medicine, National Hospital Abuja, which is the peaceful use of Atomic Energy to diagnose and treat diseases, was established in August 2007. It is equipped with dual-headed SPECT gamma camera. Nuclear Medicine and is one of only two such government owned facilities in Nigeria. Safe and non-invasive procedures are used to provide useful information on the physiological, biochemical and molecular processes of the body.
1.1 VISION STATEMENT
To ensure early diagnosis and prompt treatment of disease by providing quality diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures in the country.
1.2 MISSION STATEMENT
To create a patient friendly environment that encourages professional development in the field of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging in sub-Sahara Africa.
2.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE POLICY
We operate based on certified Guideline and Quality Assurance by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) and European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) that is adapted to our local needs.
3.0 STRENGTH OF THE DEPARTMENT
The strength of the Department is in the uniqueness of what we do and being one of very few such centres in West Africa with human and material resources to provide these services.
Services provided include;
Diagnostic Tests
- Bone: Bone cancer spread or identifying causes of pain
- Brain: Epilepsy, Tumors, Stroke/blood vessel narrowing
- Breast Cancer
- Cancer: All Organs
- Heart: Ischemia, Heart Muscle Viability, Ejection Fraction
- Infection and Inflammation: Osteomyelitis, Abscess
- Kidneys: Obstruction from stones or congenital, Renal Failure
- Liver/Gall Bladder: Abdominal Pain, Function of liver, gallbladder
- Lungs: Blood flow obstruction and/or airway obstruction
- Parathyroid: High Calcium Production
- Pediatric Imaging: Ureter Obstruction, Gastric Emptying, Reflux, Hepatobiliary scan, Oncology
- Stomach: Gastric Motility, Reflux
- Thyroid: Hyperthyroidism, Goiter or Cancer
Therapy Treatments
- Thyroid: Hyperthyroidism and Cancer
- Bone: Pain Palliation in Cancer Patients
- Lymphoma
- Radiosynovectomy
4.0 OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES:
Our Operation Guidelines is based on Certified Guidelines from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) and European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM).
5.0 WEEKLY ACTIVITIES AND SCHEDULES:
Consultant Clinic is on Wednesdays; we scan and treat patients every day of the week including weekends.

Is in accordance with Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) and European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM).
8.0 POLICY ON MINIMUM STANDARDS:
To meet internationally acceptable standard in all that we do.
