The Department of Nuclear Medicine at National hospital Abuja was established in August 2007. It is equipped with a dual-headed SPECT gamma camera. Nuclear Medicine is a branch of Medicine that utilizes nuclear radioactive atom in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of human disease conditions. It is a safe and non-invasive procedure. For the purposes of diagnosis, nuclear medicine provides useful information on the physiologic, biochemical and molecular processes of the body (functional information), other diagnostic examinations such as Xray, CT scan provides structural or anatomical information. Because nuclear medicine provides information on function, its advantages are early detection and diagnosis of disease conditions. The most commonly used nuclear agents are Technetium-99m, Iodine-123, Iodine-131, Gallium-67 and Thallium-201. These nuclear agents are injected or ingested into to the body in very small amounts (tracer dose) the patient lies under the scanning machine called the gamma camera which detects the radiation emitted by the tracer in the body and displays it as an image. The entire body can be evaluated for particular conditions using these techniques. The excretory function of the kidneys, iodine concentrating ability of the thyroid, blood flow to heart muscle, Blood flow to the brain ,blood cell formation in the bone marrow, vitamin B12 utilization etc. can be measured with nuclear technique. For treatment or therapeutic purposes, Nuclear medicine after providing information on the disease condition by imaging, can direct administration of high doses of nuclear agents for treatments. The clinical applications of Nuclear medicine for treatment include thyroid diseases such as hyperactive thyroid, thyroid cancer, bone pain, arthritis, certain types of liver cancers, blood cancers, etc. The radiation exposures to Nuclear medicine procedures are as low as reasonable achievable (ALARA).
