Plastic Surgery Unit

Mission

  1. To provide quality burns, plastic and reconstructive surgical care to all patients
  2. To train specialists in plastic surgery
  3. To carry out research work to help improve medical services in Nigeria and beyond

Coverage
We cover the whole hospital and beyond including the national trauma centre. We are involved in providing care for patients with the following conditions :

  1. Burns and its complications like contractures
  2. Keloids and hypertrophic scars
  3. Cutaneous ulcers and wounds of all sort
  4. Hand trauma , infections and other hand conditions like trigger finger, DeQuavein`s tenosynovities etc
  5. Congenital hand anomalies like syndactyly, polydactyly,constriction band syndrome
  6. Cleft lip and palate
  7. Soft tissue tumours like lipomas ,ganglions, sebaceous cyst
  8. Skin cancers
  9. Abdominoplasty
  10. Breast reconstruction
  11. Nasal deformities
  12. Ear deformities
  13. Eyelid conditions like ectopions,  ptosis, blepharospasm
  14. Pressure sores
  15. Reconstruction of complex defects in the limbs and trunk

Staffing
The unit currently have 2 consultants, 2 Registrars and 2 house officers. We aim to have at least 4 consultants. Dr. Ojeamen OIKEH and Dr. Edith TERNA-YAWE are our present consultants.

Mondays : Plastic surgery outpatient clinic from  12noon – 4pm
Tuesday :  Residents ward rounds/teachings

History of plastic surgery unit
The plastic surgery unit commenced in May, 2014 with 2 consultant plastic surgeons, 2 Registrars and 1 house officer. Prior to then, there was a visiting consultant plastic surgeon to the hospital. The plastic surgery outpatient clinic then was every first Monday of the month, however, since we commenced the unit, the clinic runs every Monday from 12noon.

  2. Burns theatre
