1.0    INTRODUCTION

The department was created in 1999 to offer dental and maxillofacial surgery Trauma care to patients of all ages. The department also offers postgraduate training.

1.1 Vision Statement

To have an autonomous craniofacial surgery department in line with best practices given the uniqueness of maxillofacial surgery in requiring both medical and dental training.

To render top quality, prompt and efficient services to our teeming patients in a serene environment.

2.0    QUALITY ASSURANCE POLICY

The department maintains and sustains quality services through

  • Regular accreditation by Postgraduate National Medical College of Nigeria.
  • Regular accreditation by the West African college of surgeons’

  • Mandatory Surgery check list
  • Regular Surgical audit
  • Routine Discharge summaries, Mortality and morbidity reviews

 

3.0    STRENGTH OF THE DEPARTMENT

The maxillofacial surgery unit is renowned for practice-improving innovation such as management of keloid and facial cleft.

The department is also endowed with specialists in orthodontics, conservative dentistry and periodontology.

   To register, pay for consultation and treatment.

   To keep to appointment time.

   To be highly cooperative during dental procedures.

   To follow all instructions given to them after treatment.

   To comport themselves in the clinic at every given time.

Services Provided

The department is divided into the following units:

  1. MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY: provides surgical services pertaining to the head and neck to patients. Deliberate training of resident doctors in this unique medical specialty with a dental base has been on-going from inception of the hospital. This unit deals with emergencies involving her anatomic region of interest. It is involved in reconstructive surgery of the oral cavity, face, head, and neck following trauma, infection, tumours including cancers, congenital anomalies such as cleft of lip and palate, management of keloid, facial cosmetic surgeries and oral implantology.
  2. CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY: This unit deals with the management of diseases of the tooth and its structures; and rehabilitation of the dentition to functional and aesthetic requirements of the individual. Included among services rendered here are tooth filling, root canal treatments, crowns, and bridges.
  3. PERIODONTOLOGY UNIT: This unit deals with the treatment of the periodontium (structures around the tooth).  
  4. ORTHODONTICS: This unit deals with the orientation of teeth within their supporting structures.

4.0 Operational Guidelines:

 

Operatively the department is divided into

  1. ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY
  2. ORTHODONTICS
  3. CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY
  4. PERIODONTOLOGY

Our patients are received via the GOPD clinic, other specialists within and outside the hospital, the ward and emergency department with radiographs and other imaging techniques with referral letter signed by a consultant. Patient is evaluated and appropriate treatment plans outlined.

 

Maxillofacial Trauma: Operates more of emergencies from the National trauma side of the hospital and managed appropriately and followed up in the outpatient clinic.

Ward Rounds

  • Consultant-led teaching round once weekly.
  • All patients are reviewed daily by Senior Registrar
  • Call hours are covered

7.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY

 

  • All staff are expected to practice universal precautions and to make use of basis PPE available at every service point in the hospital.
  • All staff are encouraged to report all health challenges to the staff clinic and incase of contact with patients infected body fluid and fomites. They shall call the HOD for upward escalation to the hospital Infection Control Unit
  • All cases of assaults should be reported from Units to HOD for report to management.

8.0 POLICY ON MINIMUM STANDARDS

 

We shall practice internationally acceptable standard based on current evidences and continue to upgrade with changing trends.
