QUALITY OF CARE POLICY AND OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES

1.0       INTRODUCTION

The department was created to offer specialist medical care in various fields of Trauma to patients of all ages. The department also offers undergraduate and postgraduate training in trauma care.

1.1       VISION STATEMENT

To render top quality, prompt and efficient trauma services across multiple subspecialties using high quality and state-of-the-art equipment in a friendly and coordinated environment.

1.2       MISSION STATEMENT

Our goal is to provide quality, prompt, courteous, empathic, confidential, comprehensive and effective services in a clean, conducive and patient-friendly environment.

2.0       QUALITY ASSURANCE POLICY

  • Recurrent accreditation by the West African College of Surgeons for both Advanced Trauma Training and Surgical Fellowship
  • Recurrent accreditation by the National Post-graduate Medical College of Nigeria.
  • Continuous collaborations with local and international institutions and organisations.

3.0       STRENGTH OF TRAUMA CENTRE

National Trauma centre is the only centre in West Africa which is accredited for Advanced Trauma Training by The West African College of Surgeons.

The Centre is made up of Trauma Consultants, Burns and Plastics Consultants, and Trauma Centre Anaesthesiologists and is supported by Orthopaedic, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic and Paediatric surgery divisions, Consultants, Senior Registrars, Registrars and House Officers.  The department also has a Secretariat that reports to the Trauma Coordinator.

Services provided by the trauma centre

A.        Emergency services

  1. Road traffic accidents patients management
  2. Gunshots injury management
  3. Stab injuries management
  4. Falls
  5. Assaults

Emergencies are attended to at the resuscitation room on the ground floor.

B.        Consultation liaison services

I.          Consults to other departments and Units in the hospital

  1. Out-patient: Trauma Clinic
  2. In-patient:  Trauma Centre wards and all Surgical wards

C. Training and Research

  • Advanced Trauma training for post-surgical fellows.
  • Training of resident doctors in Surgery and other surgical specialties.
  • Training of medical students on Trauma Postings
  • Training of students on Industrial attachment and Youth Corps members
  • Training of rescue organisations personnel in pre-hospital trauma life support, basic life support, advance cardiac life support, advanced trauma life support. Advanced paediatric life support and search and rescue programs. (Military, Police and Para-military Organisations)
  • Observerships for medical students (local and international)
  • Initiation, co-ordination and collaboration of research in trauma care management.
  • Regular update and periodic review of trauma registry

4.0       OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES

All services are carried out with the highest sense of commitment, empathy and efficiency, while ensuring patient confidentiality as contained in the NHA Trauma Centre Protocol.

  • All Trauma are attended to by the Resuscitation (Resus) Registrars immediately and by the Senior Registrar or Fellows within 15 minutes of arrival.
  • Casualty officer(s) at the trauma Resus room are to review patients within five (5) minutes of triage and commence resuscitation and send consult to the necessary subspecialties.
  • Emergency communication is by direct telephone call(s) to the unit registrar, followed by the written consult.
  • Trauma centre as an acute trauma service centre does not admit or attend to cold trauma cases (Cases after two weeks of trauma event).

5.0       DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

  • Daily review of all new trauma patients, resuscitation room attendance and documentation in the trauma registry to ensure standard of care as in TRAUMA SOP.
  • Weekly review of unit discharge summaries.
  • Monthly morbidity and mortality meeting with department of surgery.
  • Trauma consultants meets every 1st Friday of the month.
  • Weekly Activities and Schedules.
  • Round the clock provision of Emergency Trauma care services (for cases not exceeding two weeks from the event).
  • Daily Consultant’s ward-rounds
  • Weekly follow-up Trauma clinics
  • Daily Residents’ ward rounds
  • Weekly Seminars and Tutorials
  • Weekly Post-graduate teaching meetings
  • Monthly  Journal club and Research Meeting

7.0       HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY

  • Practice of universal precautions and use PPEs at every service point.
  • Staff are to present at the staff clinic when they come in contact with patients infected body fluids and fomites.  They shall call the HOD for upward escalation to the hospital Infection Control Unit
  • Any incident of assault to staff should be reported to Trauma coordinator.
