          (ALARA principle).

–           Ensuring no radiation dose exceeds the appropriate dose limit for an individual.

–           Regular calibration and maintenance of all radiology equipment.

–           Prominent signage in the different units of the department with safety precautions.

CT AREA

–           Out of bound to pregnant women.

–           Radiologists validation of patients to undergo CT scan.

–           Physiological parameters are ascertained before the administration of

           Intravenous contrast.

–           Patients are properly counseled and their consent is sought prior to CT scan.

–           Appropriate premedication in patients with known suspected allergic reaction.

MRI AREA

–           Signage at the entrance of the MRI scanner room, work station and reception.

–           Restricted items are prevented from being brought into the MRI area which includes electronic devices.

–           Medical implant (aneurysm clips, medication pumps) which could lead to

           cancellation of procedure.

–           Questionnaire to be filled by patients/relatives to undergo MRI study

SPECIALS ( CONTRAST/BARIUM STUDIES)

–           Patients booked for Hysterosalpingography are advised to apply the ten day rule to exclude pregnancy and prevent intravasation of contrast.

–           Patients are screened to know the appropriate study, contrast or barium which will be validated by a Radiologist.

ULTRASOUND

–           FAST scan is done for trauma patients to minimize waiting time.

STAFF

–           A quality control officer who is a Senior Radiographer ensures thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) batches are read regularly to monitor staff radiation dose.

–           We maintain National Hospital Safety & Health guidelines.

8.0 Policy on Minimum Standard:

–           While adhering to minimum standard of National Hospital, we don’t exceed national dose limit of ionizing radiation.
