Department of Radiology

This department’s primary role is to provide optimal Radiological and imaging diagnostic services for patients with diseases affecting all the organs/systems of the Central Nervous System (CNS), Gastrointestinal tract (GIT), Genito-urinary system (GUS), Cardio-Pulmonary System (CPS) and Musculo-Skeletal System (MSS) to diagnose inflammatory, metabolic, infectious, infestational or Neoplastic diseases and Trauma etc.Other major duties provided by the department are: Training and Research, such as Training of resident doctors, medical students on elective posting, Intern Radiographers etc.

Consultant Duties

  1. Organize and run each dedicated unit daily
  2. Supervise entire radiological works at each unit
  3. Supervise, teach and train resident doctors at work and at departmental seminars

Resident Doctors Duties

  1. Daily patients assessment for radiological investigation at the units
  2. Careful documentation of findings at patients’ investigation in the report notes.
  3. Responsibility for communication with Snr. Registrar/Consultant in that order, about any relevant radiological information regarding the management of patients.
  4. Responsibility for making sure that reports and results of patients’ Radiological investigations are prepared and delivered to record section.
  5. The junior residents are to be appropriately supervised at all times, by the Snr. Registrars, and the latter, by the Consultants.

Monday to Friday:
8.00am – 4.00pm: – Diagnostic Radiological Services at all the units
1.00pm – 2.00pm: – Lunch break time
4.00pm – 8.00am & weekends: – Emergency services
8.00am – 8.30am (Mondays & Thursdays): – Review of previous days’ works and
call- duties, to prevent/provide solutions to challenges.

There are well-established working and training relationships with the West African College of Surgeons (Faculty of Radiology) and National Postgraduate Medical College (Faculty of Radiology).

The departmental functions and duties are provided by the following Radiological equipment:

  1. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scanner (Philips NT10), the first in Nigeria and indeed in the West Coast: for Neuro-Radiology.
  2. Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner: For Neuro-Radiology, Trauma Radiology, Cancer diagnosis etc.
  3. Ultrasound Scanners (USS) including colour Doppler Scanners: for general purpose USS; Vascular US & Echocardiography; US-guided biopsy of prostate etc.
  4. Fluoroscopy Machines – for dynamic and real-time imaging of internal structures.
  5. Modern X-Ray Machines: for prompt routine and Emergency Radiography.
  6. Gamma Camera (Up-Coming): for diagnostic nuclear medicine
