AIRWAY DEVELOPMENT INCORPORATED (ADI) DONATES 30 AIRWAY MANIKINS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT TO NHA

Airway Development Incorporated donated 30 Airway Manikins and other equipment to National Hospital Abuja for training in Airway Management. The donation was made yesterday during the inaugural programme for the establishment of Airway Simulation Centres and Zonal Airway Workshops organized by the Airway Development Incorporated (ADI) in collaboration with the Society of Specialists in Airway Management Nigeria (SSAM) held in National Hospital Abuja.

In his speech, the President ADI, Dr Daniel Tapia said his teams have been equipping health care facilities with life saving materials for 15 years but realized that it was necessary to provide guidance, education and foundation so that the equipment provided will be used properly. He also said that, with the Simulation Centres in place, it will be easier to deploy more technology.

The Chief Medical Director, National Hospital Abuja Assoc. Prof. Muhammad Raji Mahmud in his response, described the project as wonderful, amazing, a life saver and essential for emergency anaesthesia. He added that considering the importance of the project, Nigeria was lucky to have up to 30 centres enjoying this programme. He also commended the team for being passionate and involving different specialists who normally work together in saving lives. The CMD then promised Management’s support towards the success of the programme.

Earlier, the Lead of Airway Development Incorporated in Nigeria Dr Rabiu Muhammad said that over the past seven years, ADI made a huge donation of equipment that improves anaesthesia emergency management and critical care in Nigeria. Dr Rabiu added that they have distributed 15000 bougies in Nigeria by ensuring that it is available in all Teaching Hospitals nationwide.

The President of the Society of Specialists in Airway Management Nigeria (SSAM) Dr Aderonke Adesiyan said the event marks the institution of training in Airway Management aiming at least four hospitals in each of the Six Geo Political Zones of the country. She said with the simulation centres in place, health care practitioners will have airway management training at their doorstep.

The NHA Director Clinical Services/CMAC Dr Abba Badamasi, Deputy CMAC Dr O.A. Badejo and Deputy Director /HoD Nursing Alh. Umar Aliyu and NHA Staff from various fields were in attendance.

NATIONAL HOSPITAL APPOINTS TWO DEPUTIES FOR DIRECTOR

CLINICAL SERVICES

The Board and Management of National Hospital Abuja have approved the appointment of two Deputy Chairmen Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC)

The first person is Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum, the current HOD Obstetrics and Gynaecology who has been appointed as DCMAC Clinical while  Dr Abba Kankarofi Badamasi, the immediate past HOD Family Medicine has  been appointed as DCMAC Research & Training.

These ingenious and commendable appointments are meant to uplift the clinical standard of the hospital, create a conducive environment for clinical practice, research and training, use of modern equipment to improve patients care, research and training.

The Management of the hospital and the Clinical Directorate are working hand in hand to ensure that National Hospital Abuja attains a higher position characterized by effective service delivery in line with the global best medical practices.

The Management of National Hospital Abuja organized a retreat at the weekend to sensitize all Heads of Departments and units on the need to have working documents for quality management policy and standard operation procedures.

While addressing the gathering, the Chief Medical Director Dr Jaf Momoh emphasized on the need to have the two documents in place as soon as possible, as they will be part of the criteria for organizational and departmental assessments soon.

The CMD also indicated that the Federal Government in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the World Health organization (WHO), is implementing the National Health Act 2014 which mandates every Federal Teaching Hospital to have Quality Management System.

He then gave all HOD’s and HOU’S two weeks to prepare Quality Policy Documents and one month to prepare Standard Operation Procedures (SOP’s) for their various departments and units. The CMD gave 12 points guidelines for the quality policy and directed that SOPS’s should answer the National checklist for all Federal Teaching Hospitals of which the management has templates for reference.   He reiterated, that the National Hospital Quality Policy and the departmental Quality Policies will be published on NHA website while the templates of the SOP’s will be placed on the hospital Server.

Another cardinal point the CMD explained was the fact that the SOP’s is not limited to quality service but will also encompass future Staff assessment of performance and promotion.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Consultant present at the gathering Mr Chidi urged the participants of the retreat to work hand in hand with Planning and Research and SERVICOM to realize this noble objective of institutionalizing data management in line with goal of the Federal Government.

Earlier, the Director Clinical Services/CMAC, Dr Aisha Umar expressed satisfaction with the mass turn out of the HOD’s and HOU’s at the occasion and opined that, with the basic requirement in place, once the quality policy and standard operation procedures are put in place, the Hospital will do well internationally.

NATIONAL HOSPITAL GRADUATES ANOTHER SET OF SIXTY POST BASIC ONCOLOGY NURSES

The National Hospital Abuja (NHA) School of Post Basic Oncology Nursing is set to graduate sixty students for the 2020/2021 academic session by November 2021.

This was disclosed recently by the course coordinator, Post Basic Oncology Nursing of the hospital Assistant Director Nursing Services, Nurse Mampak Nanre.

She also said that the school is the first and the only Accredited Post Basic Oncology Nursing in the whole West African sub region.

According to Nurse Mampak, the school got full accreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria on the 30th of April 2020 and has so far graduated 24 students as the first set after the accreditation.

It was also gathered that prior to the accreditation by the council, the school of Post Basic Oncology Nursing NHA had trained 11sets of students.

We are proud to say that from inception to date, National Hospital Abuja has trained 129 Oncology Nurses nationwide.

It is noteworthy that the newly built National Hospital Abuja Oncology Centre of Excellence, now houses the Radiation and Clinical Oncology Department, Radiotherapy Centre and the Post Basic Oncology Nursing School.

 

PRESIDENT BUHARI COMMISSIONS AND HANDED OVER EROSION AND FLOOD CONTROL PROJECT AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL ABUJA.

The President and Commander In – Chief of the Armed Forces, Maj. General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) recently commissioned and handed over the erosion and door control works at the National Hospital, Abuja. The President was represented at the event by the Secretary to The Government of the Federation, Barrister Boss Gida Mustapha on the 27th day of July, 2021. The project which is for the benefit of the National Hospital community and its environs was executed by the Federal Government through the Ecological Fund Office in the Office of The Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary Ecological Fund Office, Dr. Habiba Muda Lawal said that the project was initiated based on an urgent request for intervention made by the former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole in order to eliminate the challenges posed by the continuous erosion and flooding within the hospital and its community. She said that the commissioning and handing over of the project will achieve the purpose of enabling the host community take over and exercise ownership over the project thereby avoiding further environmental degradation, loss of lives and properties. She further advised the management of the hospital to ensure its maintenance and sustainability as the resources which the federal Government has committed to the project will not be a waste.

In his remarks, the Minister of Health, Dr. E.O. Ehanire said that not only will the project be a life saver but also the biggest gain is the more valuable area of land it has opened which will in no distant time be utilized by a German Philanthropist for the establishment of (he children’s clinic. He cautioned against dumping of refuse in the area as well as encouraged proper maintenance to avoid the washing of the top soil into the channel.

In his speech, the Minister for FCT, Muhammad Musa Bello said that he was very proud of the existence of such a wonderful and important project in the FCT. He gave a quotation and said that the project might be 800 metres in length but the multiplying effect constituting its existence is much more than that. He thanked the Buhari led Government and the Ecological Fund Once for all the interventions which many more people stand to benefit.

Delivering his speech, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Barrister Boss Gida Mustapha said that he was delighted being a representative of the Federal Government at the commissioning and handing over of the executed project. He said that the importance of the project to the hospital is to address the devastating effects it has on the hospital community.

The SGF mentioned that with the execution of the project, it has shown the attention the Federal Government has given or put in tackling problems of its citizens, thereby making life more meaningful to the people. He said again that the Buhari led administration is committed to the promise that no part of the country will suffer any neglect owing to its geographic location and political consideration, but will rather entrench justice, equity and fair play to all and sundry.

He further said that the commissioning of the project will improve the living standard of the people in the hospital community and its environs as well as reduce dangers to lives and property associated with erosion and flooding. He assured that the Federal Government is commitment to continue the implementation of genuine Government policies, agreements and contracts at both national and International levels.

He concluded that the project stand to provide a window of opportunities for the hospital, hence, more land mass areas are being recovered. He thereafter, implored the hospital to cherish the project by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels, since it is the responsibility of the hospital to own and maintain the project to ensure sustainability.

In his vote of thanks, the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Abuja Dr. JAF Momoh thanked Mr. President for the approval and all dignitaries in attendance. He recounted devastating effects of flooding over the globe and reaffirmed the importance of the project to the hospital structures mostly the Cancer Centre building which he said is the concluding phase of the best cancer centre in West Africa with 60% completion and which has since been put to use.

He again appreciated the efforts of the Ecological Fund Office which before now donated an incinerator to the hospital and recounted its usefulness stretching to other hospitals in the FCT during the outbreak of COVID 19. He further added that the impact of the project is that it has produced a window for expansion of the hospital in which a structure is already on ground containing six floors, with six wings and a car park beneath which will move the hospital from the existing 400 beds to 600 beds. He assured Mr. President of continuous maintenance of the project so that it remains useful to the FCT as a whole.

4TH COCHRANE AFRICA INDABA CONFERENCE HELD IN NATIONAL HOSPITAL, ABUJA

Cochrane Nigeria recently hosted its 4th Cochrane Africa Indaba – International Evidence Based Health Care Conference at the National Hospital, Abuja Trauma Centre Auditorium from 13 – 15 July, 2021. The Theme of the conference was: “Making Evidence Based Healthcare Functional in Africa”. The event is aimed at bringing together researchers, health professionals, policy makers, national, regional and international stakeholders evidence based champions and Cochrane Africa collaborators to deliberate on priorities and strategies for making healthcare decisions evidence based at all levels of the healthcare delivery system in Africa.

In her welcome address Prof. Angela Oyo – lta who was the chairperson of the LOC said that the event is an epoch making event which features the official launch of Cochrane Nigeria Centre. She added that as a people, it is important to be part of the body that not only contributes to the body of evidence, but also utilizes available evidence in developing policies and practice guidelines that will address our healthcare needs. She further said that it is expected that the conference will improve the knowledge and skills of participants on Evidence Based Health Care (EBHC) practice, and to strengthen collaboration within and outside the continent for sustainable practice in different fields.

In his goodwill message, the Chief Medical Director, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Prof. Ikpeme Ikpeme said that as the host institution (which is the university of Calabar) he is very proud to have associated himself with it, with over 14 years of achievement serving at the branch of the South African Cochrane Centre which also has trained a generation of Cochrane systematic review authors across the country, with the engagement of key stakeholders. He promised that the UCTH as an institution will continue to provide all needed support to sustain the activities where demonstrable impact will be achieved in national, regional and global healthcare and policy.

Also the Chief Medical Director of National Hospital Dr. JAF Momoh in his message welcomed them to his domain. He said the Cochrane Africa Network has been the core hub where people are trained in research, dissemination of systematic review that have impacted evidence based health policy formulation, with this as the 1st review hosted in National hospital where efforts were made for effective exit from South Africa to become a group or its own.

The CMD thanked the Cochrane Nigerian members who have worked so hard for this remarkable achievement taking cognizance of the interest of Nigerians and West African sub region at large.

Dr. Nneka Orji, a representative of the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Adeleke Olorunnimbe Mamora in her speech said that the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Health is delighted to be associated with this laudable intervention. She said again that the evidence generated through research will continue to be counted as the global best practices which will continue to define health care delivery across all boards and in Nigeria in particular.

She commended the laudable efforts made by putting Nigeria positively on the global map and thereafter, called for local content evidence for decision making especially with the current trend in reconstituting financial resources for running the health system since development partners are no more assisting.

She enjoined the team to work closely with the Federal Ministry of Health to change the narrative of putting our research output on the shelves in our offices.

A presentation was made by Emmanuel Effa on Cochrane Nigeria: 15 years on. While a keynote Address was given on “Reducing waste, improving qualify: The Role of Clinical Practice Guidelines” by Prof. Mohammed Nasir Sambo.

                                               

                                                                                                                     

QUARTERLY STAKEHOLDERS’ FORUM RESUMED

The quarterly stakeholders’ meeting of the National Hospital, Abuja Stakeholders’ Forum was reconvened on Tuesday 15th June, 2021 at the Trauma Centre Auditorium after a long break due to the COVID 19 pandemic that affected the most countries of the world.

In a welcome address by the Ag. HOD/Marketing Hajia Abdulmaleek Bilkisu sought the support of members in attendance as she assumed the mantle of leadership as the new Head of Marketing Department. She also announced the resuscitation of the endoscopic and Pap smear machines, and general improvement on other services. Furthermore, she advised them on the need to settle their bills timely to enable the hospital serve them better.

The meeting was divided into two sessions with the first being a lecture which was anchored by the HOD/Oncology, Dr. Aruah C.S on the theme: “knowledge Sharing”. During which he called on the HMOs to always give accelerated approval for the treatment of cancer patients taking chemotherapy doses. While the second session was interactive, participants brainstormed on services rendered by service providers, subsequent payment by the HMOs and NHIS overdue cost review on services.

The meeting came to an end with a clarion call on those indebted to the hospital to do more as to upset their debts and advised to inform the management of any identifiable service failure so that the hospital will continue to render good services to its esteemed clients.

CMD TO CREATE RECREATIONAL FACILITY.

Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) of the National Hospital, Abuja recently won the National Medical Association (NMA) trophy in a tournament organized by the umbrella body. The trophy was presented to the CMD by the CMAC, Dr. Aisha Umar at the Hospital Board room.

During her presentation, she pointed out areas of excellent achievement by other sister teams as in the area of men’s relay which won a gold medal, women’s relay 2nd, volleyball 2nd and table tennis 3rd positions, respectively.

Receiving the trophy, the Chief Medical Director Dr. JAF Momoh thanked the team for the wonderful performance. He recounted the events during the celebration of the hospital’s 20th anniversary, where sporting events were included as part of the programme just to make staff inculcate the spirit of sportsmanship in their daily life.

The CMD encouraged the team to read beyond their professional areas of study as well as be involved in recreational activities. He added that a recreational facility will soon be in place adjacent to UBA at the hospital residential staff quarters. It is in the light of this that the preservation of the hospital environment by the construction of drainages is being effected with the ecological funds recently acquired from the Federal Government. He went further to explain that a horticultural expert will in no distant time be involved in the beautification of the area where adequate garden space and sporting areas will be carved out.

He concluded that by the time the recreational centre is created the hospital public will be required to group themselves into teams where competitions will be organized for teams to challenge each other.

PR STAFF TRAIN TOWARDS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

The Management has recently approved the training of the staff of Information and Protocol Management Department of the hospital. The training which started on Wednesday 23rd June, 2021 ended Thursday 24th June, 2021 as it was a 2 day training. The aim was to mold the departmental staff to be responsive, effective, efficient and more responsible in the discharge of their duties.

The resource person, Mr. Peter Oyeneye, a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations was invited to anchor the programme at the Hospital Trauma Centre Auditorium. Other co-mentors at the programme include the departmental HOD, Tayo Haastrup, Ph.D and the Assistant Director in the department, Rabiah Mohammad Bello.

The topics covered include Crisis/Issue Management., Events Management, Media Relations, Digital Communication/ E – PR, Protocol Services and Customer Relations/Front Office Management, respectively.

MEDICAID SUPPORTS NATIONAL HOSPITAL ABUJA TOWARDS TREATMENT OF CANCER PATIENTS

Her excellency Dr Mrs. Zainab Bagudu, Founder of Medicaid and a Woman who has a long standing advocacy on Cancer Care in Nigeria and her team paid an advocacy visit to the National Hospital, Abuja yesterday to mark this Year’s International Cancer Week and made huge donation to Cancer Patients.

She deliberately chose National Hospital as her focal point because of the Hospital’s strategic location, and its efforts in Cancer Care for Patients coming from all parts of the Country.

She was received by the Chief Medical Director National Hospital Abuja Prof. Muhammad Raji Mahmud flanked by NHA Directors and other key officers.
